Lake Langano is a freshwater lake fed mostly by streams to the east from the Arsi Mountains at the southern end and discharges to the northern end via the River Hora Kello River to Lake Abiyata. The water is usually a milky tea color. Despite its milky tea color, the water in the lake is thought to have healing properties due to the high mineral content.
Langano is a popular swimming destination for both locals and tourist. There are a number of resorts around the lake and water sports are popular. Langano National reserve is located east of the Lake, has countless indigenous species including hippos, monkeys, baboons, warthogs, and a huge variety of birds. Some of the popular activities include swimming, volleyball, , horse riding, camping, etc.
Lake Langano is part of the Rift Valley Lake system. Three Ethiopian lakes – Shala, Abijata, and Langano were once all connected by a large lake. By 2,000 years ago, the Lake had declined so much that it became three separate bodies of water, explained NASA. “Despite their shared origin, the lakes have evolved separately and now have different appearances and water chemistries.”
